Nicole Moudaber is best known for her percussive, hypnotic and intoxicating sounds that she brings to dance floors around the world. Born in Ibadan, Nigeria to a Lebanese family, Mudaber spent her childhood in Lagos and moved to Beirut as a teenager. The producer says it was difficult for her to grow up in a patriarchal society, but she "defied the odds in the Middle East". However, Mudaber's freedom was threatened when she organized a party and was sentenced to prison.
He organized a Halloween party in the late 90s after the war in Lebanon. Many attendees were from the LGBTQI+ community and sparked controversy five months after the party when a major magazine published a cover story claiming Moudaber was spreading "homosexuality and perversion" in Beirut.
She was then called to the police station and admitted that she had in fact organized the party. The officer said she must be held until a judge signs a release warrant. The judge couldn't sign the order in time, so she spent eight hours in jail until her sister, who is a lawyer, could free her.
"I kept the story a secret all these years," Mudaber says. "My parents never knew. Nobody knew."
"It was not an easy road for me", he adds. "I feel ready, I have the right to talk about it now."
The entertainer is proving she has the right to discuss it now, especially given the massive platform her impressive success has given her. He creates chart-topping music, performs at major festivals around the world, runs MOOD Records and the award-winning weekly radio show In The MOOD.
Moudaber finds inspiration in architecture, a sunny day, a "coffee with a joint" morning, a conversation with a friend, in everything that makes it beautiful. "The simple things in life... that's the beauty, the things that make you happy." She said. Her perfect day starts when she wakes up with a smile, which she finds amazing since she's usually tired from traveling the world.
When she's not creating strong techniques to rule the dance floor, the production company says she listens to soothing music or local radio when she's in a Latin American country or Spain.
"My life is so noisy," she says. “I'm in the studio on the weekends [and at] clubs and festivals. Everything is so loud and sometimes I just need to rest my ears. She adds that she often listens to spiritual and astrological podcasts to relax.
Moudaber also has a penchant for racing cars. He got into racing six years ago when a friend, a Formula 1 test driver and two-time European GT champion, suggested he try racing, knowing his love of cars and his need for speed. She was instantly hooked and applied for a professional driving license in 2016. Since then she's test driven cars in the UK, Barbados and Lisbon, Portugal, and the fastest she's ever clocked is 165mph. His other passion is boats, which he likes to spend the day on a boat in places like Ibiza and the Caribbean. Moudaber, who grew up on the shores of the Mediterranean, says she loves the sea.
As for what's next for him, Mudaber says he plans to write a book.
"I'm going to talk about my journey to who I am today," she says. "How I grew up in a patriarchal society, how everything was so difficult for me as a woman. Everyone said, 'No, you can't.' No, you can't. It's not for women. It wasn't easy for a woman like me to to party and defy all traditional customs and cultures. I did it again.
